As President Obama tries to revive national healthcare reform despite a bitterly divided Congress (Read more on
the White House proposal), PBLN has been deeply engaged in the details of healthcare policy in Massachusetts. Last Friday our Healthcare and Life Sciences Working Group brought 40 PBLN members and other business leaders together for a productive dialogue with some key drivers of healthcare policy in Massachusetts. The topic was healthcare cost containment, with specific focus on Massachusetts Governor Patrick's
proposal to directly address rising insurance and provider rates out of concern for small businesses (a similar proposal was made at the national level by President Obama yesterday). We looked at the entire issue of cost through the lens of our existing
position statement in support of universal healthcare coverage and payment reform. We decided to issue a brief
public statement in order to go on the record about the urgency of payment reform in order to move toward a coordinated healthcare system that is built around outcomes and not just spending and utilization.
