PBLN member George Matouk, President and CEO of John Matouk & Co., a company manufacturing fine linens in Fall River, Massachusetts, has been doing the unexpected for a long time. George is a visionary and has transformed a legacy business with his own set of 21st century business skills, honed at Columbia Business School. He is not only creating good jobs in manufacturing, but now is about to unveil an 84 kw solar-powered energy system on the roof of Matouk's Fall River factory.
Made possible by a partnership with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick's "Commonwealth Solar" initiative and federal government programs, Matouk reports that "the new system will reduce carbon emissions by 176,022 pounds of CO2 annually. This is equivalent to the emissions from an average passenger car driving 336,373 miles every year for thirty years, and the CO2 that would be removed by planting 70 acres of trees."
Matouk also says, "This system will also reduce Nitrogen oxide emissions by 15,300 pounds over the life of the system—nitrogen oxides are a major contributor to smog and air induced respiratory problems.”
According to Matouk, the solar system has already generated power since January, and can be monitored through a special reporting site set up at this link by Borrego Solar Systems, the Lowell, Massachusetts-based company that designed and installed it.
